Casey Cheshire and Justin Brady on Connect To Market episode 67

On “Connect To Market,” Justin Brady talks with Casey Cheshire about alignment, peak and path, and trust channels

Justin Brady joined host Casey Cheshire on Connect To Market, the B2B marketing podcast produced by Ringmaster, for Episode 67, “Why Your Marketing Can’t Connect If Your Company Isn’t Aligned.” Cheshire opened with a simple question: what is the number one thing marketers need to do to connect with their market? Brady’s answer was internal alignment. Until a company agrees on where it is going, he said, campaigns, PR and demand generation won’t land.

Brady walked through his “peak and path” framework. The peak is the big, ambitious outcome the world should reach. The path is how the company will help get there. Once leadership agrees on both, sales, marketing, HR and recruiting can carry the same idea in their own words instead of reading from a script. He cited Virgin Voyages as a brand where the marketing, operations and onboard experience all speak the same language.

He also argued that most organizations don’t lack creativity. “The problem is usually leadership who doesn’t listen to the ideas already in their company,” he said. His fix is listening, empathy and trust, backed by small experiments, because “it’s harder to shoot down a test.”

On audiences, Brady said a market is “rarely a demographic, it’s usually a set of values.” He urged listeners to “never ever ever try to build a following from scratch” and instead find the trust channels their customers already rely on. In one example, interviews with a tech client’s best customers showed they read The Wall Street Journal and The Economist rather than tech trade outlets. That finding led to a feature in the Journal.
